How to Make Gifts of Securities
If you are considering a gift to The Evergreen State College Foundation, it may be to your advantage to give marketable stocks or bonds that have appreciated in value.
It’s easy to do—and it’s easy on the pocketbook. Not only is the fair market value of the securities deductible as a charitable gift, but you also bypass paying capital gains tax on the appreciation.
(Please see your professional advisor to determine applicability of these regulations.)
Stock gifts are valued by calculating the average between the high and low value of the stock on the day the gift is made.
Option 1
If your broker holds the security for your account, electronically transfer/wire your stocks to The Evergreen State College Foundation’s broker.
When electronically transferring stock, please provide the Foundation with this information:
- when you’re transferring the stock
- number of shares
- name of the shares
- name of your brokerage firm
- fundraising initiative you are supporting
Second, Instruct your broker to electronically transfer—known as “DTC” – the securities to The Evergreen State College Foundation’s account at Merrill Lynch, using the information:
- Make stock payable to: The Evergreen State College Foundation and indicate specific fundraising initiative, e.g. The Evergreen Annual Fund.
- The Evergreen State College Foundation Tax ID#: 91-0981488
- Depository Trust Corporation (DTC) #: 5198
- Sample stock power letter in case your broker requires you to submit one.
Option 2
